Intyatyambo's History

Lindiwe Mfeketho and Nomawethu Tunce just got tired of hearing and seeing the misery and anguish of the many children who have been and are being neglected, abused and abandoned in their area. They decided to take action! Intyatyambo was born! Nomawethu donated the use of her property for the site and Lindiwe and Nomawethu together built a small wendy-house cum  shack to serve as the first shelter in which the kids could eat, play, listen to stories, sing and receive lots of love and care. Intyatyambo was registered as a Non Profit Organisation with the Department of Social Development of South Africa on the 8th of June 2006.

NPO Registration Number: 049-219-NPO

Lindiwe, Nomawethu and the other women of Intyatyambo have been at it ever since, with no government funding.  Intyatyambo’s only source of funds is donations from the public.

Fundraising and developments to date

In the beginning, Lindiwe recruited some women to stand on streets in Cape Town and its environs to raise awareness and collect donations from passers-by.

It takes R960.00  (about US$ 140.00 at the time of writing) per week to feed the children. In the past, this was sometimes not realised and then the children had to do without. We have stepped up our fund raising efforts since then. More has come in thanks to some generous donors. The children’s basic needs – food and clothing are sufficiently taken care of now.

Also, three professionally converted shipping containers with a clean bathroom, hygienic playrooms and bedrooms have replaced the basic tin shack that they spent their days in before. However, we’re still very far from our goal of raising enough funds to build a new care centre.
